Can we answer any questions for you first?

  • Wide Open School is a place for families to find and share activities for kids in preschool through 12th grade to do at home.

    The editors at Common Sense have tested and reviewed hundreds of educational resources and organized the best ones into collections grouped by subject and organized by grade band. Our goal is to make it quick and easy for you to find high-quality, age-appropriate learning activities that meet your needs.

    If you select a category like "Math," you will see short descriptions of relevant resources accompanied by thumbnail images. Click or tap an image, and you will be taken off Wide Open School to view the resource on the provider's website.

  • Yes! Anyone can use all the resources on Wide Open School for free. Some are always free, but may require you to create an account. If you have trouble accessing any of the resources listed on our site, please let us know below by using the Get in Touch form below.

  • We will keep Wide Open School online and continue to improve it throughout the 2020-2021 school year. The site is updated regularly to ensure that the only resources listed are those that can be accessed for free by everyone.

  • Wide Open School depends on and includes links to many partner sites where content is hosted. Content creators are adding new videos, activities, and experiences all the time, so we update the Wide Open School site daily. If you aren't seeing things change, please make sure you have refreshed your browser by using Command-Shift-R. Can't find a specific resource you saw on Wide Open School recently? Use the search function at the top right corner of the page. Enter the search term and click the yellow search icon.

  • You do not need to sign up anywhere to access content on Wide Open School—you can jump right in. However, once you have selected resources on our partners' sites, they may ask you to sign in or create an account.

  • Expert reviewers and editors from Common Sense Education curate everything on the Wide Open School site to surface quality kids' media, learning, entertainment, and wellness resources. The editors look for resources and experiences that are free, easily accessible, age-appropriate, and engaging. The main question they ask before selecting a resource is: Will this get kids thinking, creating, or moving?

  • Wide Open School is accessible anywhere it's possible to connect to the web. All of the site navigation is currently written in English.

  • There is a small heart on every resource on the site. When you select the heart, it changes to red. This means you have added that resource to your "My Favorites" page.

    Your "My Favorites" page can be accessed through the heart on the top right corner of every page. Your "My Favorites" list is accessible specifically through the browser and device you are currently using. If you change browsers or change devices, the list will not be available. To remove a resource from your list, click the "Remove" link at the bottom right of every resource in the list, or unselect the red heart attached to the resource.

  • On each resource, there is a "Send" button. If you select "Send," you have the option to copy the link, email the link, text the link via SMS (if you are using a mobile phone), or share using Google Classroom.

  • Please share out to your community. Sharing with friends, colleagues, and family directly or on social media is a great way to help us get the word out and continue to provide support to families and educators everywhere. For links to Common Sense social media accounts, please refer to the footer on every page.

  • Here are a few ideas for sharing Wide Open School with the educators and families in your school community:

    - Add Wide Open School to your remote learning portal. As an example, see how the Connecticut Department of Education included the website within its Educator Learning Hub.

    - Tell your teachers about our free resources and activities.

    - Include Wide Open School in your communications with families.

    - Ask teachers to sign up for the Common Sense Education newsletter to stay up to date with all distance learning products and materials from Common Sense including Wide Open School.

    - Ask parents to sign up for the Common Sense Media newsletter to stay up to date with Common Sense's family resources for supporting learning at home including Wide Open School.

  • If there's something you think could be improved on our site, we want to know about it! Please give as much detail as possible and include a link to the page or feature you want to tell us about. This will ensure that we identify and correct the problem as quickly as possible. If the problem is with a link not from, then we will do our best to alert the content provider. Submit feedback using the Get in Touch form below.

  • If your organization offers free resources that are appropriate for students, families, or educators, we'd love to hear from you. Fill out the form using the Get in Touch form below and give us a brief description of the resource and the link. Please know that we get many submissions. If we are interested in your content we will be in touch!

  • We do not currently have job opportunities at Wide Open School.
